Brisk walking is different from ordinary walking or strolling. It is a form of exercise that stimulates the body's bones, muscles and nervous systems by increasing walking speed (at least 4.83 kilometers per hour and at least 90 steps per minute) and increasing step frequency and stride length. It is also the most cost-effective and easiest to implement moderate-intensity physical activity recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO)1. A 2017 report by Public Health England shows that walking for 10 minutes a day or 70-90 minutes a week can "reduce the risk of premature death by 15%", "enhance physical fitness", "improve mood", and "lose weight and maintain a healthy body shape"2. If you can extend your physical activity time to 30 minutes a day and 150 minutes a week, the benefits to your health will be even more significant. To develop a habit of physical activity, start with something you like and that is easy to do.
Let's all stay healthy together. Body mass index (BMI) is an internationally accepted tool for assessing body shape. The National Health Administration recommends that the BMI of adults in Taiwan should be maintained between 18.5 (kg/m2) and 24 (kg/m2). Being too thin or too fat is not good for health.
In recent years, the National Health Administration of the Ministry of Health and Welfare has continued to promote walking activities. Through digital tools, it can not only increase the fun of the activities, but also collect people's walking data, such as activity time, distance, number of steps, GPX tracks, calories burned, etc., and further analyze these data to understand the distribution of users walking across Taiwan. It is hoped that in the future, through the linkage of various counties and cities, the public can be encouraged to cultivate exercise habits through walking, so that health can become a kind of enjoyment in life, and move towards a healthier and more energetic life together.
